Camden County WWII Vets Get Relief from High Fuel Prices:
More Than 250 Winners of Gas Card Lottery for Vets Will Receive Prizes On Thursday In Haddonfield
County Veterans Affairs, County Clerk, and Local Businesses Organize Event
HADDONFIELD, NJ (August 25, 2008)—More than 250 World War II Veterans in Camden County will receive a $50 Sunoco gas gift card free on Thursday, August 28, at Carl’s Sunoco at 515 Haddon Avenue here.
The Veterans are winners of a lottery—designed to provide fuel cost relief to Camden County Veterans of World War II and organized by the Camden County Veterans Affairs and County Clerk’s Offices—with financial support from Somerdale-based allRisk Property Damage Experts.
“We are humbled by our Veterans' service,” said Christine Messina of allRisk Property Damage Experts. “We have the means to make this donation, because we live in the greatest country in the world. The freedom and opportunities afforded to us would not be possible without our Veterans’ sacrifice and dedication.”
More than 100 World War II Veterans gathered for an August 15 lottery drawing at the Voorhees Town Center to witness County Clerk James Beach select 240 names from the more than 1,200 entries for a free gas card with a value of $50.
The veterans did not have to be present to win. And all winners have been notified by the County to arrive at an appointed time between 9 AM and 2 PM on August 28 at Haddonfield’s Carl’s Sunoco to collect their gas cards.
Winners have been instructed to enter Rhoads Avenue at Grove Street and travel Rhoads—lined with red, white, and blue balloons and flags—toward Haddon Avenue to their destination at Carl’s Sunoco where they will be greeted with more balloons, bunting and banners provided by allRisk Property Damage Experts to salute the Veterans’ service.
Volunteers will be stationed along Rhoads Avenue to greet veterans, offer refreshments, check all winning vouchers, and distribute the gift cards. Veterans remain in their vehicles throughout the process for their convenience and safety.
allRisk, an emergency response firm, provided the financial support for 200 gas cards with a $10,000 donation and purchased the cards in advance through Jim Jones, owner of Carl’s Sunoco Station. Joining allRisk as sponsors are Bowman & Co, ($1,000) and Proof Productions ($1,000).
Because many of the veterans who attended the August 15th drawing were not winners in the random drawing, allRisk has made an additional contribution so that every veteran who was present will also receive a gas card. allRisk is also providing refreshments, balloons, signs, and volunteers for the August 28 event.
allRisk was awarded the sponsorship for the event based on its proposal in response to the County’s publicly advertised Request for Sponsorship, offering local businesses the opportunity to donate gift cards to needy county WWII Veterans.
