Flood Causes $1.5 Million in Damages at Rowan University
Rowan University suffered $1.5 million in damages from Sunday’s flooding, but university spokesman Joe Cardona said all repairs and replacements will be complete by the time students come back to campus later this month.
“It was widespread and affected many buildings,” said Cardona on Wednesday. “The little road leading from the parking lot to the football field was under several feet of water, and there was a lot of buildings damaged by water infiltration.”
As an example, Cardona said water flowed into the recreation center — despite three drains positioned outside — and the basketball courts were under water. Some of that water leaked into the locker rooms, damaging drywall and sheet rock that now needs to be removed.
“In some of the offices, they were able to just suck out the water and run fans, but there are a lot of places where we have to replace carpets,” he said. “Our IT department had to be taken out and moved to a different part of campus, and there were some electrical issues in our central plant from water damage that knocked out air conditioning in some of the buildings.”
Of the academic buildings, Wilson and Bunce Halls were most affected, said Cardona, but emergency cleanup company All Risk has been on campus since Sunday working on the situation.
“The FM Global insurance carrier helped us develop the $1.5 million number, and that’s a conservative estimate for all the damage,” said Cardona. “A big problem is that we have a stream that runs through campus that feeds from the runoff of all the surrounding streets. Whenever we have a heavy storm like this, it washes out everything.”
